word on the street

i've found it quite startling how spotless everything is here. the streets are barren of trash, and unnervingly few trash cans. beyond garbage, there are 9 types of recycling (not including batteries), so you need a bloody degree just to keep on top of that.
the cars are, predictably, largely quite small (heh heh). the thing is, though, that those that aren't small are monstrous minivans. pickups don't even exist, even pimped out lowered ones. one thing that is universal, however, is that all the cars (and monstrous minivans) are disproportionately tall and skinny. there's no way this kind of headroom is needed for any asian. and being so tall and skinny, they all look so awkward and boxy, zipping aroung on the wrong side of the street.
also predictable in the town of toyota, yet worthy of a moment to stop and go "hmm", is that everyone owns a toyota. i guess it would be accurate to say toyota owns everyone, as all these cars are bought with employee-discounted toyota paychecks.

Hey man, Love the blog. Sounds like you have been having a wicked trip thus far. I really think your articles and pictures are top notch. Where listening or reading some people’s stories of places can seem muddy you manage to get your descriptions through clear as glass. I have a couple questions for you. I remember talking to you about the large number of right hand drive vehicles that are now on the streets of Vancouver, of which are presumable from Japan. I was curious if they have any Toyota land cruisers (or other note worthy vehicles) on the street there... and if so, have you seen any for sale? The reason I ask is that there must be a reason that they would go through the trouble of shipping them all the way from Japan and going through all the safety inspections etc. Anyway I have just been pondering this for a little while and thought I might ask the person who would probably know best;) I don't mean for you to spend any time actually looking, as I know you’re probably very busy. But just if you happen to be walking down the street and notice. Anyway cheers man and enjoy. Hope to talk to you soon. -Jason

the most expensive version of land cruiser (the cygnus, or in japanese シグナス) costs about 5,838,000 yen or 58000 dollars. however you can get them as cheap as 30000 dollars (the プラド, i don't think this translates to an english word. sounds like 'prado' though). amongst the myriads of tiny toyotas i so see the odd land cruiser.
